“Whatever form they take, families are our most time-honoured settings for giving and receiving love, understanding and nurturing. They can connect us with our past and be the ground for the future through our children. They are places where we stand the best chance of being understood for who we truly are, not what we possess or the power we wield. They can give us meaning in life and hope when the outside world fails us and when we fail.”

Alexis Moreno is a Chicana whose ancestors were born in the US, Mexico, and on Isleta Pueblo in what is now New Mexico. A first-generation college graduate and professional, Alexis holds an M.A. in Urban Planning from UCLA.  She is a trained community organizer, meeting facilitator and Civic Reflection facilitator, and has deep experience in program design and evaluation, staff and professional development, community engagement, community-based participatory research and issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Prior to joining Be Strong Families, she served as Learning Facilitator for the Population Change Learning Community, a network of 11 community-based initiatives in the US and Canada that seek to transform systems of care for children and families in their respective localities.

Alexis wholeheartedly believes that community members are experts in their own lives, and approaches her work with deep respect for the dignity and potential of every person. She experiences joy when co-creating opportunities for all stakeholders to act upon their highest aspirations for themselves, their families, organizations, and communities, especially those that have experienced structural violence and discrimination.

One of her peak professional experiences was designing and managing a 6-month learning experience where high school students and adults conducted community-based research around health and wellness. She was deeply rewarded when she witnessed the transformation of residents, who began to recognize themselves as contributors to their community and advocates for their families and community.

She enjoys yoga, arts and crafts, working with herbs, reading, concerts, traveling, and spending time in nature. She lives in the foothills of Southern California with her husband and 11 year old son.

Alexis joined Be Strong Families in 2018 as Outcomes & Impact Team Lead and Senior Trainer.
