Minnesota-based Author Launches Kickstarter to Help Us Save the World

In the spirit of sharing at the time of year for giving, Be Strong Families wants to make our community aware of a new resource in the works by one of our webinar presenters Lori Myren-Manbeck and partners at the Alliance for Sustainability

(Edina, MN) – For many years, we have been hearing scary warnings about the future. The United Nation says humanity is about ten years away from the tipping point at which catastrophic climate change will be inevitable.  The effects of global warming are in the daily news.

The organization “As You Sow” says if no action is taken to reduce the flow of plastics into waterways, by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish; and “Drop in the Bucket” points out that 758 million or 1-in-10 people on Planet Earth do not have access to clean drinking water.

“We listen to the news. We know to stop the catastrophic effects of climate change, we have to do something to reduce consumption, to choose better materials, to hold companies and governments responsible. But it can be so overwhelming and hard to know where to start.  We need a plan.  We need some easy steps each of us can take so that we begin to think sustainability in everything we do.  Then, we will be able to create a safe and healthy future for everyone.” said Lori Myren-Manbeck of Edina, Minnesota.

In late 2020, Lori, CEO of Inclusivi-tee and a board member of The Alliance for Sustainability, decided to write a book to help people on their sustainability journeys.  She enlisted help from her intern, Eileen O’Brien, and You Can Save the World, In Fact, You’re the Only One Who Can was born.

“The title of the book doesn’t mean we believe anyone can do this alone.  We know it is going to take corporations and governments and leaders to stop environmental disaster.  The title is meant to inspire people to believe they have power, that their individual actions matter.  If enough people act as if they have power, we can in fact save the world.  Our collective voices, our collective actions, can force governments and corporations to do what they need to do to make lasting and significant change.”

The book is divided into three sections: food, clothes and lifestyle. The food section provides tips for eating out, like using your own reusable carry out container. In the clothing section, readers learn how to do their laundry in a more sustainable way. There are also tips on travel and gardening, and on what to look for in the store when you are shopping.

Lori said the e-book has been out since early 2021, with limited distribution.  She said, “Now that we have lived with the book for a couple years, we are ready for a wider audience.  To do that, we have to raise the money to print the book in the most ecofriendly way and to get the book translated into several languages.  That is where the kickstarter comes in.”

To raise the funds needed to bring the printed book to market sustainably and find that larger audience, the Kickstarter campaign launches on December 7, 2022 and runs through January 7, 2022.

  • In exchange for supporting the Kickstarter, the following rewards are offered: Everyone who donates at least $5 to the campaign will receive a downloadable eBook that will be delivered within one week of donation. Those who donate $10 can receive a multi-language eBook in Spanish, Chinese or Arabic to be delivered by May, 2023.

  • $25 donors will receive a printed book plus the e-Book; $50 donors receive two printed books; $55 donors will receive a downloadable photo from the book; $75 donors get a printed book plus a digital photo download. Books are expected to be printed by June, 2023.

  • A donation in the amount of $125 earns donors the opportunity to be interviewed on Lori Myren-Manbeck’s podcast, Inclusive-Tea Podcast, in July 2023. A $500 donation secures a one-hour Sustainable Living Presentation to the donor’s group or business by Lori Myren-Manbeck and The Alliance for Sustainability.

  • $1,000 donors can choose to receive a month-long sustainable living challenge event for their organization or business, organized by Lori, which will include simple challenges, presentations, and prizes.

Once books are printed and in circulation, 10 percent of all proceeds will be donated to The Alliance for Sustainability, a nonprofit focused on creating a sustainable future.
