Home Is Where the Heart Is: Conversations to Love and Affirm Your LGBTQIA+ Children (Parent Café Booster Pack) is a conversation deck with 150 questions based on the five Protective Factors for parents whose children are identifying as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. While most approaches to this issue rest heavily on training for parents about the importance of acceptance for long-term positive outcomes for children, these Cafés are for parents who don’t need to be convinced. They love their children, they want to support them, and they are wrestling with their own feelings, values, fears, and limiting beliefs.

The foundation for the deck is: 1) the assumption of parents’ unconditional love for their children and their willingness to practice self-awareness and to surface and interrogate their biases, and 2) full knowledge of the benefits of listening and talking through thorny subjects in the safe context of Parent Cafés. The design team is a collaboration of parents with lived experience supporting their children’s gender and sexual orientation journey to discover and live true to who they are, as well as professionals who have devoted their professional lives to assisting LGBTQIA+ youth and the adults who love them.

Parents of Teens & Emerging Adults Parent Café in a Box is a conversation deck that assists with navigating our kids’ adolescence.

As our children mature and become teenagers and emerging adults, there are countless new challenges that parents face raising them. Our Parent Cafés for Parents of Teens & Emerging Adults support parents in having real, authentic conversations with other parents around these challenges, and this Café in a Box features 200 questions in both English and Spanish that use the five Protective Factors to facilitate these conversations.

The box can be used either as a standalone deck or shuffled together with other conversation decks in Be Strong Families’ Parent Café in a Box suite. Each question on these Café in a Box cards assists parents in having honest, in-depth dialogues with other parents that will strengthen their understanding of their own role as parents and how to truly engage with their teenagers and emerging adults.

REVISED AND EXPANDED! The Dads Parent Café in a Box opens the door to authentic, engaging dialogue around a variety of father-focused topics, including societal expectations of men as parents, being a positive male role model in the family unit, challenges and successes as expressed by fathers, co-parenting in the modern world, and much more. If you are trying to connect with fathers, this Café in a Box can do just that by assisting organizations, parents, and community members in expanding their Café themes and attracting more fathers to get involved in support programs.

This revamped deck features 55 Café cards (total 275 questions) in both English and Spanish, with questions consistent with best practices for father engagement in family service and fatherhood programs. It includes updated content based on feedback from the Be Strong Families community and fosters a safe and trusting environment for fathers or mixed-gender groups to learn about the Strengthening Families™ Protective Factors while building and encouraging deep self-reflection and peer-to-peer learning.

A More Perfect Union conversations occur at the nexus of social justice and parenting, allowing parents to explore the broader context for parenting in a complicated and often unjust world. Organized around the Strengthening Families™ Protective Factors, the questions in this Café in a Box mobilize shared civic values of freedom, prosperity, safety, justice, and healing to assist parents in talking to their children about difficult issues and brainstorming how to keep their families safe.

A More Perfect Union Parent Café in a Box contains over 300 bilingual (English/Spanish) questions, organized by the five Protective Factors, that allow parents to explore the broader context for parenting in a complicated and often unjust world. These questions can be used by themselves or used along with our original Parent Café in a Box.
