Naming this Resource
Be Strong Families has chosen to use the term “children with disabilities” with this Café resource. Our goal is to use person-first language that highlights an individual’s humanity and does not conflate the person with the disability.
Other terms that have been predominantly used in the human services community, such as “special needs,” are generally considered to be antiquated, ineffective euphemisms that can act as barriers to essential conversation. In using the term “children with disabilities,” we utilize an inclusive term consistent with the current predominant preference of people in the community being served.
