Building Protective Factors with Child-Welfare-Involved Families

Be Strong Families partners to create transformative change by developing and sustaining conversations that nurture the spirit of family, promote well-being and prevent violence.

The Building Protective Factors with Child-Welfare-Involved Families program is sponsored by IDCFS and gives Be Strong Families the opportunity to work in partnership with Illinois child-welfare systems to bolster their family-centered, strengths-based, trauma-informed services for children, youth, and families.

All family support services can be hosted at no cost for partner agencies.

Program Goal

The ultimate goals behind knowledge and skill building in these workshops are:

  • Strengthen families

  • Facilitate permanency, especially through family reunification

  • Keep foster care placements stable

  • Effectively prepare youth and emerging adults for successful transition to independence

History of the Program

Be Strong Families grew out of a primary child abuse prevention initiative — Strengthening Families Illinois — entirely funded by IDCFS between 2007 and 2012. That relationship never ended.

Since 2012, Be Strong Families has held a fee-for-service contract to build Protective Factors with Child Welfare-involved families across Illinois—delivering hundreds of direct service workshops annually at partner organizations statewide.

Parents with Child-Welfare Involvement
