Be Strong Families and the ARTEMPLE Foundation are developing Open Studio, BSF’s first arts initiative, to bring artist-led creative experiences to underserved young people in Chicago and give them room to express themselves, process emotions and have their ideas honored.
Art lets young people follow their own ideas, give form to what they are feeling and share their work on their own terms. In a society that too often silences young people—especially young people of color—having their expression met with attention and respect carries healing power. Open Studio creates room for young people to make, reflect and be heard.
Supported by a $25,000 grant, the initiative is being planned with Family Focus Lawndale, Family Focus Englewood and the Boys & Girls Club of West Garfield Park. Each two-hour session will serve up to 30 young people. A local artist will guide a creative activity, followed by reflection and a closing healing circle.
Organizers are coordinating locations and schedules and completing background checks for participating artists. Parents and caregivers of teens or emerging adults can contact us.
